Backyard Putting Green Installation

Practice your putting without leaving the house. A green shaped to your yard, built on a firm, smooth base so the ball rolls true.

A green is a different build

A putting green looks simple, but it is the most exacting turf job there is. A lawn can hide a small dip. On a green, the ball finds it every time.

So the base is built smoother and firmer than for a lawn, and the turf is a short, dense putting surface rather than grass-like blades. Most backyard greens also get a border of regular turf as fringe, so the green blends into the yard.

What goes into a putting green

Shape and size

Planned with you to fit the space and the shots you want to practice.

Firm, smooth base

The base is compacted harder and finished smoother than for a lawn, with any breaks built in on purpose.

Cups

Cup placement planned with you before the turf goes down.

Fringe

Regular turf around the green so it blends into the yard instead of ending at bare ground.

Putting turf

Putting turf is short, tight and smooth, made so a ball rolls across it rather than sitting in it. It is topped with more infill than lawn turf, which sets how fast the green plays.

Pile height
About 0.6 in Short, dense fiber for a true roll.
Drainage
Over 118 in/hr For the putting turf we work with. A green still needs a base that drains.
Infill
About 2 to 3 lb per sq ft Heavier than a lawn. It controls the speed of the green.

Common Questions

Common Questions

How big should a backyard putting green be?

As big as the space and the budget allow, but even a small green with two or three cups is useful for practice. We'll plan the size and cup positions with you before anything is dug.

Can a putting green have slopes and breaks?

Yes. Breaks are shaped into the base before the turf goes down. Tell us how much challenge you want; gentle breaks suit most backyard greens.

What upkeep does a putting green need?

Keep it clear of leaves and debris, and brush it now and then to keep the surface even. Over time the infill may need topping up to keep the speed consistent.

Can you put a green next to an artificial lawn?

Yes. A green surrounded by lawn turf is a common layout. The two are built on different bases and joined at the edge.
